Electric car price and range: what a kilometre of range costs in Switzerland
Divide the list price by the WLTP range and a kilometre of range costs between 68 and 118 francs across the 25 entry versions we surveyed, 86 at the median. This article shows the calculation on nine examples and says what the figure does not tell you about a car.
How it is calculated
The importer’s list price including VAT, divided by the lower WLTP range. If the price list gives a span, the lower value counts, so the result errs high rather than low. Promotional prices are left out. We read the prices on 10.10.2026 from the importers’ price lists and configurators.
| Model and version | List price | Range WLTP | CHF per km |
|---|---|---|---|
| MG4 Urban, 54 kWh Comfort | CHF 24’490 | 416 km | 59 |
| MG4 Urban, 43 kWh Comfort | CHF 21’990 | 325 km | 68 |
| Dacia Spring, Expression Electric 80 | CHF 16’790 | 246–250 km | 68 |
| Renault Twingo, Evolution 80 PS | CHF 18’900 | 262–263 km | 72 |
| Škoda Elroq, Essential 60 | CHF 37’300 | 444–451 km | 84 |
| Volkswagen ID.3, Trend 50 kWh | CHF 34’800 | 413–417 km | 84 |
| Nissan Leaf, Engage 52 kWh | CHF 38’990 | 403–445 km | 97 |
| Hyundai Kona, Origo 48,4 kWh | CHF 39’900 | 377 km | 106 |
| Volvo EX30, Core | CHF 38’250 | 324–339 km | 118 |
The table runs from cheap to expensive. Per kilometre, the Volvo EX30 costs about twice as much as the MG4 Urban with 54 kWh.
More battery can lower the figure per kilometre
The lowest value of all 52 surveyed versions belongs to the MG4 Urban with the larger battery: CHF 24’490 for 416 kilometres, 59 francs per kilometre. The 43 kWh version costs CHF 21’990 for 325 kilometres, so 68. For CHF 2’500 more you get 91 kilometres of range. The Dacia Spring, with the lowest list price in the survey (CHF 16’790), comes to 68.
The range is a span
The Nissan Leaf, at CHF 38’990 and 403 to 445 kilometres, comes to 97 francs per kilometre on the lower range and 88 on the upper. WLTP range is a standard figure under test conditions. We have no dated series on range in everyday use or in winter, so there is no figure for it here.
What the figure does not tell you
It uses only the purchase price.
- Consumption. A car with a large battery and high consumption reaches the same figure as an economical one with a small battery. Energy costs are in the total costs.
- Charging power. How fast the car charges on the road does not enter the figure.
- Discounts. For 6 of the 25 entry versions the importer states a promotional price, which we keep separate.
- Residual value. The list price is the price on the day of purchase. What the car is worth later is shown in the article Depreciation and timing.
What this means for your choice
- If you often drive far, compare the versions with the large battery. On the MG4 Urban the larger one costs 2’500 francs more and delivers 91 kilometres more.
- If you rarely drive far, the purchase price matters more than the figure per kilometre. Models up to CHF 30’000 are on Cheap electric cars.
- Compare on the lower range. That keeps the advertised figure out of the calculation.
- Then calculate the total costs. The My EV calculator adds electricity, tax and depreciation.
What we do not know
- The price at the dealer. The list price is not binding; the dealer’s offer is.
- Tesla. The Model Y and Model 3 are missing because tesla.com blocks access from here.
- Prices without a validity date. Some lists give none; the row in reichweitenpreise.json ↗ then says so.

Transparency: the figure is the list price divided by the lower WLTP range, rounded to whole francs. The median covers the 25 entry versions. Every figure in this article is recalculated automatically on every change and searched for in the text, in all four languages.
