The essentials in three sentences

  • At the end of 2025, 249’832 passenger cars in Switzerland were fully electric — 5,3 per cent of the total fleet of 4’750’000.
  • Among new registrations the electric share currently stands at 24,6 per cent, roughly 4,7 times as high: registrations are the inflow, the fleet is the basin.
  • Counting plug-in hybrids as well, 394’832 passenger cars run with a plug, 8,3 per cent.

Why 24,6 per cent of new registrations make only 5,3 per cent of the fleet

A new-car share says nothing about what is actually on the road.

Around 4’750’000 passenger cars are registered in Switzerland. Some 227’384 are newly registered each year — a good 4,8 per cent of the fleet. Even if every new car were electric from tomorrow, a complete replacement would take more than a decade, because a passenger car stays registered far longer than ten years on average. The fleet share therefore follows the registration share with a delay and smoothed out: it is always the average of all past years, not the value of the current one.

Checked: 249’832 out of 4’750’000 is 5,3 per cent. The registration share of 24,6 per cent, by contrast, refers to the 151’589 vehicles of the current period — a different reference population, not a different measurement of the same one.

How this is calculated

The fleet share is the fleet divided by the total fleet at the same reference date, year end. The registration share is the number of newly registered electric passenger cars divided by all newly registered passenger cars in the same period, here 8 months 2026. Both figures stand side by side deliberately and are never mixed. The factor 4,7 is the quotient of the two, rounded to one decimal.

What is imprecise about these figures

The fleet values for the years 2019 to 2024 are held rounded to the thousand in the data basis; only 2025 is exact to the vehicle. For 4’750’000 passenger cars that is at most 0,01 per cent of deviation, so immaterial for what this page states — but it belongs here. The exact values for the earlier years will be brought in at the next data update. The fleet is also surveyed once a year, not monthly: between two year ends there is no intermediate value.
